Achille Lauro
Lauro Line
In 1993 the iconic ship Achille Auro was docked in Antwerp for the first time. May people will probably still
remember the name of this ill-fated ship. In 1947 the ship was delivered as 'Willem Ruys' to the Koninklijke
Rotterdamsche Lloyd. In 1965 the ship was sold to the Italian company Lauro Line and was rechristened Achille
Lauro.
Sadly the ships' future was dotted with obstacles. On October 7th 1985 the ship was hijacked off the coast of
Egypt by four men. This event caused one death onboard. Later the ship resumed it's normal cruise schedule. The
ship visited Antwerp during a cruise through Western Europe.
One year later, on November 30th 1994, the faith of the ship was sealed after a fire broke out onboard. The ship
capsized and eventually sank on December 2nd. Four people lost their life.
This ship was berthed in Antwerp on 19 March 1993.
