part
of
the
fleet
of
the
British
company
Cruise
&
Maritime
Voyages.
The
ship
was
built
in
1965
as
MS
Aleksandr
Pushkin
at
the
Mathias-
Thesen
Werft
in
the
former
East-Germany.
It
was
one
of
five
identical
sister
ships
that
were
ordered
by
the
Baltic
Shipping
Company
from
the
former
Soviet
Union.
The
ships
were
designed
to
both
be
able
to
sail
regular
services
and
cruises.
It
is
one
of
the
last
ocean
liners
that
is
still
sailing
today.
In
2015
the
ship
celebrated
its
50th
birthday.
This
is
exceptional
as
an
average
ship
gets
put
out
of
service
after
around
40
years.
At
that
age
the
maintenance
costs
tend
to
become
too
high,
but
at
the
moment
this
does
not seem to be a problem for the company.
Throughout
the
years
the
ship
only
changed
names
a
single
time.
In
1991
the
name
was
changed
from
Aleksandr
Pushkin
to
Marco
Polo.
At
the
moment
(2018)
it
is
one
of
the
oldest
still
sailing
cruise
ships
that,
with
a
few
small
rebuilds,
is
still
in
a
fairly
original
state.
On
top
of
that
all
the
engines
are still original from 1965.
