Lightship West-Hinder III in Antwerp
The
West-Hinder
III
is
one
of
three
lightships
that
have
been
built
at
the
shipyard
Beliard
Crighton
&
Co.
Scheepswerf
in
Ostend
in
1950.
It
was
the
third
and
last
generation
of
lightships
that
would
be
deployed
at
the
sandbanks.
The
ships
were
normally
deployed
on
turn
at
the
namesake
sandbank
West
Hinder
(North-East
of
Nieuwpoort),
but
sometimes
also
at
the
sandbank
Wandelaar
near
Zeebrugge.
The
ships
functioned
as
beacons
for
the
ships
and
signalled
dangerous
places
at
sea.
The
last
lightship
retired in 1994.
